box ring

i think this is a very interesting take on a box ring, as part of my first year training at CPUT in Cape Town we made a box ring. it was quite challenging but rather rewarding to make. i learnt how to create a hollow construction through that project. the box ring i made was quite simple as is this ring however this ring has more substance to it. the pierced out designs are quite intricate, i also love the balance of the dark pink and light pink on the inside of the ring.

my heart lies on the beaches of mauritius.

i think this ring is absolutally beautiful! it has such a raw charm to it, it is not over worked and over the top, it is elegant and yet playful.
there are so many different shades of purple in the stone and the silver setting fits around it perfectly. i really love the size and organic shapes of it all.

this amazing ring is very inspirational to me, i love it!

this photo has always bring a smile to my face, this was a very joyous time in my life.. it was the last days of my high school, we all dressed up for the day i loved every minute of it..
the photo is of me aka tinkerbell and a good friend of mine Aditya aka Afroman..=] i played with the colours and the contrast to create interesting shading and colours.. anyways, this photo always make me laugh and think of amazing days! i love this photo=]

All Maria Phillips images at Velvet da Vinci Gallery,

perpetual 3 made by Maria Phillips

i think this ring is rather interesting, i think that the materials are very well mixed, they work well together. i like the size of the ring as well, some people may find it is too big but i like the look of wearing one big statement making piece, it becomes a very interesting visual aspect on your person and it can also be an easy conversation starter..
the 'spiral' in the ring is very organic, which is something i love.
i think that over all this is a very strong piece and yet it is very elegant..

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart) - ee cummings

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
ee cummings

i first read this poem when i was about 12 years old and it has always stuck with me.. i find it lifting and inspiring.
this beautiful poem has been my favourite ever since i read it, i love it.
it puts a smile on my face and always makes me think of wonderful, happy memories.
i find this poet extremely interesting, he never used punctuation in his work, i assume he thought it would stunt the words..
this poem has always and will always be special to me.

Erik Johansson Photography

i think what Erik Johansson does with photographs is very interesting, he creates these amazing images of people or things that could not be possible in real life. he uses photoshop and other similar programs to manipulate and change photos. they are very surreal and often make you think of illusion.

i think what he has done in the picture above is incredible, it looks so realistic and yet you know its impossible... i think he also makes very good use of the light in the picture, most of his photographs are telling a story and this makes them intriguing.

this photo has a comical aspect to it however it envokes many emotions, the man in the photo does not look very pleased but then again nor would i be if i was a puppet. aside from his work being very interesting to look at, Johansson addresses some interesting issues for example the picture of the man pulling the road over the grass could be suggesting that we the human race are destroying the environment.

old vs new

VS

i found this absolutally beautiful pair of earrings (above to the right)made by Simone Walsh and the first thought that went through my mind was i love this modern take on the 'cameo'. the reason i love it so much is it makes this version of the cameo very original, the woman's face has been etched and then blackened and the raised surface sanded down to contrast the blackened surface. as well as the fact that this one is made out of sterling silver whereas the image that springs to mind when i think of a cameo is one craved in shell.

i truly love the cameo. i have a cameo craved out of shell that my mother gave to me which i will one day give to my daughter. i think they are truly beautiful and elegant and i love both of these versions.

designs for the future

this really interesting dress was designed by Phillips as part of their SKIN line of emotive clothing, in other words clothes that show our emotions through them. Phillips has designed this dress for the future, they believe that in roughly 2020 people will be wearing clothes that have sensors in them which are able to pick up on our emotions and therefore display them through colours on the dress. clam emotions would be displayed as blues and greens or soothing colours whereas not so calm emotions would be displayed as reds and oranges.

this beautiful dress won Time's Invention of the Year in 2008. however i would be interested to see whether in 2020 people will really be wearing clothes that allow everyone to read their emotions or whether this will be too personal for some. i guess we will just have to wait 10 years and see.

simple little words - "i miss you the second you leave"

i love this ring, i think it is very simple and plain but very sweet.
even though it is a very simple ring to manufacture i think it works really well.
my favourite part is obviously the rubber stamp with the words 'i miss you the second you leave', it makes a statement of emotion in a very sweet way.
i also really like the fact that the bar where the stamp sits would sit over your two other fingers however the bar is not long enough in order for it to become uncomfortable.
i just think that the ring is a very charming, simple one. =]

Lucy Brown

Squeeze is an amazingly structural piece of art. The artist Lucy Brown creates these awesome sculptures out of old garments, she reworks, unpicks, weaves and cuts these old clothes to create these thought provoking sculptures. These piece plays on how women in society reconstruct their bodies to make them more conventionally beautiful and also reflects society's obsession with thinness.
I find it very interesting when an artist has a take on social issues and i find that Lucy Brown brings her point forward very intelligently and interestingly. and her sculptures are amazing to look at!

Emanuela Duca

Emanuela Duca's 'Terra' Bangle
Emanuela Duca is an american jewellery designer who's jewellery i find truly amazing. She manages to create pieces that are very organic in shape and texture out of precious metals.
As far as I understand she uses rather basic techniques to create jewellery that is eye catching and beautiful.
Emanuela Duca is very inspirational to me, i love the look of her very simple jewellery and the fact that she draws inspiration from nature and the beach interests me greatly.

Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated with sculpture and creating things with my hands which was the first reason why I got into jewellery manufacture. I have a love of things that are ugly beautiful, things that are not attractive at first glance but a truly beautiful upon second look. I love the metallic shine of metal and the millions of different shades of silver found in one piece of jewellery. As I am from a tropical island nature has always influenced me and inspired me. I love unrefined, organic shapes and designs.
