Infecting the City Expo at Cape Town Train Station

Infecting the City is Cape Town's annual public art expo that happens all around town. there were so many things happening everywhere however the main even was at the train station where there were many artworks some finished and some in progress as well as a stage made of rubbish where there were people playing musical instruments and were putting on shows.

i thought the whole thing was really interesting however i thought there could have been some more interesting artworks, there is so much you can do with recycled materials and materials like plastic, i thought that the artworks inside the train station in the glass cases were the most interesting, there were metal sculptures and incredible photos. the photos were almost high fashion editorials contrasting with the dull, dirty backgrounds of some of the poorer areas around South Africa.

Questions for Design Theory

  • Define; Learner/learning: learning to me is understanding new information and being able to apply it in a given situation, a learner is someone doing this, the best learners are those who are willing to learn.
  • Define;Teacher/teaching: a teacher is someone who brings forward new information in a way that allows the learner to understand it. anyone can be a teacher as anyone can bring forward information for someone to learn however there are people who are better qualified to teach (personality wise as well as a teaching degree)
  • What motivates you to learn? i feel motivated by positive reinforcement, it also helps if im interested in the topic (for example, i struggle more with history than design theory as i have always had trouble remembered things like dates whereas with design theory im learning about techniques that i am going to use and this helps as i am more technically incline however i am trying to put more effort into history as i believe it is good to understand where the techniques and jewellery we are learning about come from)
  • How do you learn? i learn through practice and demonstrations.
  • How do you know you understand something? re-explaining something always helps, it shows me whether i have understood something if the other person understands it. putting the information into use helps me better understand something.

modern signet ring

interesting modern take on a signet ring, i hated making this ring, it was very challenging and hard. however once it was made there was a slight sense of achievement. it think this detail on the top of the ring makes it very interesting.

Cupcake Country

this company exhibited at the 2011 design indaba, their stand was very colourful and exciting however i found it was a little bit of a let down once you got close to it, everything was very similar and chlidlike. the company aims for that child like playfulness, i however find it a little bit too over whelming and over the top. i think that the stuff is cute but i dont think id bug anything very soon.

charm bracelets

i like charm bracelets, they can be either very classy or very playful, this charm bracelet is very beautiful and simple, i like how they is only one charm on this bracelet, and the filigree charm is exquisite.

they can be more whimsical than elegant, i like this one thats made up of buttons, its a very sweet and non conventional way of using charms. i love all the different colours of the buttons and all the different shapes of the buttons.

incredible sculpture

i fell inlove with this sculpture when i first saw this, i think its absolutely amazing. i think its brilliant, the colours draw you in as well as the incredible structure of it, the way the skull sticks out of the wall is so interesting. i really love this sculpture.
